Camilla Scott

Early on the morning of June 12, 2017, Mother Camilla Brower Scott, the widow of Brother Emmett H. Scott, went home to be with her Heavenly Father.

Mother Scott was the oldest of 5 children born to the late Curtis Brower and Catherine Brower in Eagle Springs NC, on September 3, 1920.

At an early age, she received the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and attended Holly Grove Baptist Church. Since she was the oldest of the Brower children, she was entrusted with helping her father in his store in Eagle Springs where she began to develop her love for business principles. Encouraged by her parents, she graduated from high school and entered North Carolina A&T University and graduated with a degree in education. Teaching became her passion.

Her teaching career led her to Hampton VA, where she met Emmett Scott in front of the Holly Tree Inn on the campus of Hampton Institute, (Hampton University). Another passion was born. They were married on June 16, 1951, and that romance lasted over 50 years.

Mother Scott taught in the Hampton City School System. Most notably, she taught at George P. Phenix, High School, where she was known as the “Typing Teacher.” However, typing and shorthand were not the only lessons she taught. She imparted lessons of integrity, excellence, persistence, perseverance and encouraged them to pursue their dreams.

Mother Scott was an active member of the Gamma Upsilon Omega Chapter (Hampton) of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. until her health became an issue. She was also a member of the NAACP.

Mother Scott served in various ministries here at First Baptist Church and was a tireless, loving, and giving worker. Her faith in Christ was evident to all who encountered her in the church and in the community. She will be missed by all that knew her.

Mother Scott was predeceased by her parents, her brother, William P. Brower, and sisters Nevada Wilson and Eugenia Brower.

She is survived by her step daughter, Marcia Mills of Raleigh, NC; her sister Lillie B. Sims of Fayetteville, NC; a special niece, Cathy Jones of Eagle Springs, NC, and a host of other relatives and friends.
